Stéphane Bancel was appointed CEO of bioMérieux, a world leader of in vitro diagnostics for clinical and industrial applications, in January 2007. From 2000 to 2006, Stéphane worked in the United States, Great Britain and Belgium for Eli Lilly laboratories, where he successively held the positions of Managing Director, Executive Director for Global Manufacturing Strategy, Global Supply Chain and U.S. Distribution, and Supply Chain Manager. From 1995 to 1998, Stéphane worked at bioMérieux in Japan, where he was in charge of the industrial microbiology business for the Asia-Pacific region. Stéphane is a graduate of the Ecole Centrale Paris engineering school, and holds a Master of Science in biochemical engineering from the University of Minnesota, as well as a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Jeremy Goldberg, MBA ’89, is a skilled business development executive with over 25 years of experience, mainly focused on investing and business development in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. Howard Grant, J.D., M.D.
President/CEO Lahey Clinic

A physician, attorney and health care chief executive, Howard R. Grant, JD, MD, the president and chief executive officer of Lahey Clinic, has played a vital role in influencing patient safety and superior clinical care for more than two decades at some of the nation’s most preeminent health care institutions.

At Geisinger Health System, Dr. Grant was the executive vice president and chief medical officer responsible, with his administrative colleagues, for operations and budgets for 27 clinical service lines, and physician and administrator recruitment. He was also charged with aligning clinical operations with Geisinger Health Plan, a not-for-profit insurance company.

Prior to Geisinger, Dr. Grant had a long tenure at Temple University Health System, where he served in a succession of leadership roles, including chief medical officer. He was responsible for performance improvement, risk management and patient safety; integration of clinical and operational programs across multiple facilities; and clinical leadership of case and disease management.

Dr. Grant began his medical career at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and in addition to serving as a staff pediatrician, he directed quality assurance, risk management and utilization management programs. From 1992 to 1997, he served as corporate vice president for medical affairs at the Chester County Hospital.

Dr. Grant earned both his medical and law degrees from George Washington University, and holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Physician Executives, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

David Green, MBA '91
Co-founder and President, Harvard Bioscience

David graduated from Oxford University, England in 1985 with an honors degree in physics. From 1985 to 1989, he was a consumer goods brand manager in London, then moved to the USA in 1989, where he graduated with distinction from Harvard Business School in 1991.

From 1991 to 1995, David was a corporate strategy consultant with Monitor Company in Cambridge, MA and Johannesburg, South Africa, and ran all of Monitor’s worldwide training programs. In late 1995, David returned to the USA and put together the venture backed deal that created Harvard Bioscience (which began as Harvard Apparatus at Harvard Medical School in 1901), becoming President and a Director. The products are used to advance life science research at virtually all pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and research universities worldwide. The company went public in December 2000, and Harvard Bioscience has grown from $9m in revenues in 1996 to approximately $90m in 2006 through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions, making it highly profitable.

Wyc Grousbeck
CEO, Governor and Co-Owner, Boston Celtics

Wycliffe Grousbeck has been Managing Partner, Governor and CEO of the Boston Celtics since December 2002, after organizing and leading a local investment group that purchased the team. Wyc is the NBA Governor of the Celtics, the Chair of the NBA Planning Committee, and is a member of the NBA Labor Relations, Finance, Compensation and Audit Committees.

Wyc named the investment group "Banner 17 LLC" to signify his primary goal, returning the Celtics to contention for their 17th World Championship. He was honored to accept the championship trophy on June 17, 2008, as the Celtics defeated the Lakers by 39 points and became World Champions for the first time in 22 years.

At Princeton he rowed on the undefeated varsity eight that claimed the Ivy League and national rowing championships in 1983.

Robert S. Huckman
Professor, Harvard Business School

Robert Huckman is a Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, as well as the faculty co-chair of the HBS Healthcare Initiative, a faculty research fellow in the health care program of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and the co-chair of the management track of Harvard's doctoral program in health policy.

Professor Huckman's research focuses on the linkages between organizational characteristics and operating performance, with an emphasis on the health care industry. His articles have appeared in publications including the American Economic Journal, the American Economic Review, Harvard Business Review, Health Affairs, the Journal of Health Economics,Management Science, the New England Journal of Medicine, Organization Science, and the Strategic Management Journal. Jeffrey Kindler
Former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Pfizer

Jeff Kindler is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer, the world's largest research-based biopharmaceutical company, from which he retired in December 2010. He joined Pfizer in January 2002 as Executive Vice President and General Counsel. Prior to his appointment as CEO in July 2006, he was promoted to the position of a Vice Chairman of the company and a member of its four-person Executive Committee with responsibility for Pfizer's worldwide legal, compliance, communications, government relations, corporate citizenship, policy development, and global security groups.

Jeff began his legal career as an attorney at the Federal Communications Commission, then served as law clerks in both the U.S. Court of Appeals of the D.C. Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court. He joined the law firm of Williams & Connolly, eventually becoming a Partner, and later joined General Electric as Vice President of Litigation and Legal Policy. After that, Jeff joined McDonald's Corporation as Executive Vice President and General Counsel.

He previously served on the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the President’s Export Council, the Business Roundtable, the Shanghai Mayor’s Business Advisory Council, Catalyst, the United Way of New York City, the Legal Aid Society, Lincoln Center, and as Chairman of the U.S.-Japan Business Council. Brian S. Klepper Ph.D.

Brian R. Klepper, Ph.D. is a health care analyst, industry advisor and commentator. Paul LaViolette

Paul LaViolette joined SVLS in January 2009.  He brings over 28 years of global medical technology marketing and general management experience. Paul was most recently Chief Operating Officer at Boston Scientific Corporation (BSC), an $8 billion medical device leader. During his 15 years at BSC, he served as COO, Group President, President-Cardiology and President-International as the company grew revenues over 20 times. Paul integrated two dozen acquisitions and led extensive product development, operations and worldwide commercial organizations. Paul previously held marketing and general management positions at CR Bard, and various marketing roles at Kendall (Tyco). Martin Madaus
Former President, Chairman and CEO, Millipore Corporation

Martin Madaus is an independent consultant for the life science industry. From January 2005 to July 2010, he served as President, Chairman and CEO of Millipore Corporation, where he transformed the company from a filtration business to a leading life science corporation. Under Dr. Madaus’ leadership, Millipore completed several strategic acquisitions, expanded core capabilities, doubled annual revenues, expanded global operations and improved shareholder value by 114%. Dr. Madaus was instrumental in facilitating Millipore’s acquisition by Merck KGaA in July 2010.

Before joining Millipore, Dr. Madaus served as President, CEO and head of North American operations for Roche Diagnostics Corporation. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Business Development for Roche Molecular Diagnostics, and General Manager of Boehringer Mannheim Canada. From 1989 to 1998, he held a number of senior-level sales, marketing and product management positions with Boehringer Mannheim Corporation in both Germany and the United States.

Before beginning his corporate career, Dr. Madaus was a practicing equine veterinarian in Germany and Spain. He holds a D.M.V. and a Ph.D. in veterinary medicine, and is a Director of Mettler Toledo International and Quanterix Corporation.

Robert Musslewhite

Robert Musslewhite serves as Chief Executive Officer of The Advisory Board Company (Nasdaq: ABCO). Mr. Musslewhite joined the firm in 2003, initially serving in executive roles in strategic planning and new product development. Samuel Nussbaum, MD

Dr. Samuel Nussbaum is Executive Vice President, Clinical Health Policy, Chief Medical Officer for WellPoint, Inc., and Interim President of WellPoint’s Comprehensive Health Solutions Business Unit.

Within Clinical Health Policy, Nussbaum oversees corporate medical policy, clinical pharmacy programs, and public health policy.  He also has responsibility for HealthCore, WellPoint’s clinical outcomes research subsidiary.  As the leader of Comprehensive Health Solutions, which includes WellPoint’s provider relations, care and disease management, imaging management, personal health guidance companies, and WellPoint’s pharmacy solutions group, Nussbaum is responsible for focusing on the issues of medical cost, quality of care and enhancing member value through innovative health solutions.

Lawrence H. Summers
President Emeritus, Harvard University

Lawrence H. Summers is President Emeritus of Harvard University. During the past two decades he has served in a series of senior policy positions, including Vice President of development economics and chief economist of the World Bank, Undersecretary of the Treasury for International Affairs, Director of the National Economic Council for the Obama Administration from 2009 to 2011, and Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, from 1999 to 2001. He is currently the Charles W. Eliot University Professor at Harvard University.

He received a bachelor of science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975 and was awarded a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1982. In 1983, he became one of the youngest individuals in recent history to be named as a tenured member of the Harvard University faculty. Waterman Award of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and in 1993, he was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, given every two years to the outstanding American economist under the age of 40.
 

Andrew J. Sussman, M.D., M.B.A.

Andrew J. Sussman, M.D., M.B.A. has been President of MinuteClinic, the largest retail clinic provider in the United States, since 2009, growing them over 40%, and expanding its scope of services and health system affiliations. He is also the SVP and Associate Chief Medical Officer of CVS/Caremark. 

He was previously Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer of UMass Memorial Medical Center, the largest healthcare provider in central New England, and was responsible for all clinical services and daily operations at the 800 bed academic medical center, the major teaching affiliate of UMass Medical School. Dr. Sussman is also an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Steve Wardell, MBA '00

Steve Wardell is a business development and corporate finance professional with transactional and company-building experience in e-health, health services, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical devices. Steve is Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development at Boston-based MedNetworks, Inc. Cristoph Westphal, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Westphal founded Longwood Founders Fund, a venture capital fund based in Boston, and serves as General Partner.

In addition to these roles, Dr. Westphal is the Co-Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of Sirtris, which he co-founded in 2004 and led as Chief Executive Officer until 2010. Under his leadership, Sirtris established itself as a recognized pioneer in the research and development of drugs targeting the aging process enzymes. In 2007, Dr. Westphal successfully guided the company through its initial public offering, resulting in recognition by the Boston Globe as one of the Globe 100 top companies of 2007. In June 2008, GSK acquired Sirtris for $720 million.

Dr. Westphal was previously co-founder and CEO of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Momenta Pharmaceuticals and Acceleron Pharma. He also co-founded Alnara, which was sold to Eli Lilly for $380M in 2010. Prior to establishing Sirtris, Dr. Westphal was a general partner at a venture fund and a consultant with McKinsey & Company. He earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and Ph.D. in genetics from Harvard University; and he graduated with a B.A. summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University.

Dr. Westphal currently serves on the Board of Fellows of Harvard Medical School and the Board of Overseers of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He has been the lead or senior author on several patent applications and scientific papers in journals, including Cell, Nature and Nature Genetics.

Stephen F. Wiggins, MBA '84
Managing Director, Essex Woodlands Health Ventures

Stephen Wiggins is a Managing Director of Essex Woodlands Health Ventures, America’s largest health care venture capital and growth equity firm with active investment practices in biotechnology, specialty pharmaceuticals, medical technology and health care services. Essex Woodlands manages eight health care funds and Stephen heads the New York Office.

Prior to Essex, Stephen was the founder and served 14 years as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Oxford Health Plans. Under his leadership, Oxford grew to over $5 billion of annual revenue and ranked among the 300 largest U.S. corporations. He was also the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of HealthMarket, Inc, an insurance company that created innovative Consumer Driven Health Plans.

He co-founded Health Partners, Inc. in 1993, a physician practice management company. He was also a principal co-Founder of Intelliclaim, Inc., which provided claim auditing and productivity software and services to over twenty health insurers before it was sold to McKesson; and BenefitPort, LLC, a consolidation of health insurance general agencies.

Stephen Wiggins has also been an active private equity investor, and serves on the Board of Directors for Touchstone Health, Ika Systems, Centerstone Partners and Arrowhawk Capital. In 1978, he founded and remains a director of Accessible Space, Inc, a nonprofit organization that develops and operates 75 residential facilities for individuals with mobility impairments and brain injuries. He served 8 years on the Executive Committee of the Health Care Leadership Council and was appointed to the Presidential Commission on Health Care under President Bill Clinton.

Stephen Wiggins holds a Bachelor of Arts from Macalester College where he currently serves as a Trustee, and a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.
