He holds a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Illinois, a BA in history and philosophy of science from Cambridge University, and a PhD in molecular biology from Trinity College and the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. His awards include the Lounsberry Medal from the National Academy of Sciences and the Joslin Medal.
